The City of Long Beach has reached a tentative three-year labor agreement with the Long Beach Lifeguards Association that increases pay and adds new incentives to help recruit and retain qualified lifeguards.

The agreement provides salary adjustments and introduces new education pay to attract and retain skilled candidates to watch over the City’s six miles of beaches and waterways.

It follows a labor agreement recently reached with firefighters.

Under the proposed contract, which covers the period from Oct. 1, 2025, through Sept. 30, 2028, lifeguards would receive general salary increases of 2% in the first year, 2% in the second and 3% in the third. The agreement also includes salary adjustments for Marine Safety Battalion Chiefs, Marine Safety Officers and Marine Safety Rescue Boat Captains.

The Lifeguards Association represents 211 employees. The total estimated cost of the three-year agreement is $1.62 million for All Funds.

The deal was reached after six negotiation meetings between City and union representatives since June. Members of the Lifeguards Association voted to ratify the agreement on Oct. 30. The proposal is scheduled to go before the Long Beach City Council for consideration and public discussion on Nov. 11.
