Remembering Former Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster
Long Beach is mourning the passing of former Mayor Robert “Bob” Foster, who passed on November 30, 2025, at the age of 78. A two-term mayor, longtime public servant and familiar face across the city, Mayor Foster is remembered for his sharp wit, steady leadership and deep love for the community he served.
When Foster was elected mayor in 2006, the city was on the brink of immense financial uncertainty. The nation soon plunged into the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, and Long Beach, like many other cities, faced dramatic increases in pension costs.
Mayor Foster didn’t shy away from the challenge. Known for being straightforward and solution-oriented, he pushed for fiscal responsibility at a time when it mattered most. His leadership on pension reform and careful financial planning helped stabilize Long Beach’s budget. By the end of his tenure, the City reached its first budget surplus in a decade, opening the door for investments that strengthened public services throughout the community.
He also championed major environmental progress at the Port of Long Beach. Working alongside port leadership, he supported sustainable initiatives that significantly advanced air quality and set a foundation for ongoing climate-focused efforts.
Those who worked with Mayor Foster often describe him as both tough-minded and incredibly approachable. He had a quick sense of humor and a natural ability to connect with people. Whether he was talking with world leaders, front-line City employees or residents he met at community events, his down-to-earth personality always came through.
Mayor Foster was devoted to his family and was a constant presence in the community long after he left office. He continued to give back by serving on local nonprofit and community boards, lending his expertise and guidance wherever it could be of help.
Mayor Foster’s passing marks the loss of a leader who helped guide Long Beach through some of its hardest chapters and set it on a positive path forward. His legacy lives on in the City’s progress, in the people he mentored and in the countless community members who benefited from his steadfastness and his compassion.
As our community reflects on his life and contributions, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Nancy, the Foster family and the many people whose lives he touched.
