Residents at The Cove—Long Beach’s newest affordable housing community specially designed for military veterans—will tell you that having a safe place to call home isn’t something to take for granted.

Jason Smith is among the first to make their beds at the four-story studio apartment complex, which celebrated a grand opening in December 2024. The complex for low-income and formerly homeless veterans was created in partnership between the City of Long Beach and Century Affordable Development, Inc., at the Century Villages at Cabrillo community in West Long Beach (2121 W. Williams St.). With 89 units, The Cove serves individuals earning between 30-60% of the area median income, plus an additional manager’s unit.

Offering more than housing, The Cove is a vibrant and supportive living environment with a central courtyard, community spaces, a computer room, classroom, shared bicycle storage and on-site support services from partners such as U.S. VETS and the Veterans Administration.

The development of The Cove is the latest in a series of affordable housing efforts spearheaded and fast-tracked by the City of Long Beach’s Community Development Department. In 2024 alone, three other affordable housing projects opened: 26 Point 2 near the Traffic Circle, Wellspring in Cambodia Town and Heritage Gardens in Midtown. Meanwhile, construction is underway at 1400 Long Beach in Midtown and 300 Alamitos in Alamitos Beach.

A true community effort, the establishment of The Cove required collaboration and support from many different agencies, including the Housing Authority of the City of Long Beach, Long Beach Community Investment Company and Wells Fargo Community Lending and Investment. The project also aligns with broader efforts by the Los Angeles County Development Authority and the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, both of which provide crucial supportive services to residents.
