The City of Long Beach is bringing the community together for the sixth annual Long Beach Safe Streets Awareness Week, taking place Monday, Aug. 17 through Saturday, Aug. 22. This year’s theme, Long Beach Moves Together, highlights the shared responsibility of creating safer streets while encouraging residents to walk, bike, roll and drive safely throughout the city.

The week features four free community events from Tuesday, Aug. 18 through Friday, Aug. 21, with opportunities to learn about traffic safety, practice safer habits and connect with community partners.

The week kicked off with a virtual Safe Driving Role Models Workshop. The workshop provided parents and trusted adults with practical information about distraction-free driving, California teen driving laws and ways to help young drivers build safer habits. Spanish interpretation will be available.

The City also brought Safe Streets resources to Recreation Park during the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine’s Movies in the Park event.

The Safe Streets are Sober Streets Nightlife Pop-Up will take place Thursday, Aug. 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Second Street in Belmont Shore during the Stroll and Savor event.

The week will wrap up Friday, Aug. 21, with a Friday Night Lights Bike Ride beginning at Bixby Park. Participants will meet at 6:45 p.m., with the ride departing at 7:15 p.m. LED bracelets and lights will be available while supplies last, creating a fun way for residents to build community while promoting visibility and bicycle safety.

Safe Streets Awareness Week supports the City's ongoing Vision Zero and transportation safety efforts. Over the past year, City traffic safety programs have reached more than 8,300 community members through school presentations, youth programs, community events and safety demonstrations. The City is also continuing to advance infrastructure and enforcement strategies to make streets safer, including the Public Works Department’s Neighborhood Traffic Management Program and its upcoming Speed Safety System, which is expected to launch this fall along some of Long Beach’s highest-need corridors.

All Safe Streets Awareness Week events are free and open to the public. For more information and registration details, visit the City’s Walk and Roll Long Beach webpage or contact the Health Department at 562.570.7995 or WalkandRollLongBeach@longbeach.gov.
