Not sure whether that takeout container belongs in the recycling bin, the trash or the organics cart? You’re not alone.

Long Beach’s Energy and Environmental Services Department is offering a series of free workshops to help residents sort their waste correctly—and maybe make a little less of it in the first place.

The workshops are running from October 2026 through August 2027, with sessions offered in both English and Spanish.

The program is part of a multilingual community outreach effort funded through a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant. Long Beach was one of just 25 applicants nationwide selected through the competitive grant process.

It’s not just about memorizing what goes in which bin. City officials say residents will learn why proper sorting matters and how small changes at home can help reduce waste.

The first free workshop, “Celebrate More, Waste Less,” will offer tips for reducing waste during the upcoming holiday season, from proper tree disposal to cleaning up after holiday parties. The family-friendly workshop will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13 at the Michelle Obama Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.).

Additional workshops will be announced soon. Residents can register online for upcoming workshops when new dates are added. There also will be updates in Long Beach’s EcoGuide newsletter.
