Long Beach Launches New Pet Licensing Program with DocuPet
The City of Long Beach is rolling out a new pet licensing program designed to make it easier for residents to keep their pets safe. Long Beach Animal Care Services (LBACS) has partnered with DocuPet—North America’s leading pet registration and lost-pet recovery service—to bring a modern, user-friendly licensing system to local pet owners.
Through this partnership, every pet licensed with LBACS will receive a DocuPet tag and access to HomeSafe, a 24/7 lost pet service. Each tag features a unique identification code linked to a secure online pet profile, where owners can upload photos, add behavior or medical notes, and list emergency contacts.
If a pet goes missing, owners can file a Lost Pet Report through DocuPet. Reports are instantly shared with Petco Love Lost, the nation’s largest photo-matching lost-and-found database, as well as DocuPet’s National Animal Shelter Network. Shelters can then quickly identify lost pets using ID codes, microchips, and physical descriptions—often allowing reunification before a pet ever enters the shelter.
The new platform will streamline the licensing process, helping staff redirect time and resources toward essential animal care and community support programs.
Additional benefits include:
- A smoother licensing experience: Pet owners can renew or register online with a few clicks.
- Timely reminders: Automatic email and mail notifications help keep licenses up to date.
- Stronger support for local shelters: Fewer lost pets in the shelter means more capacity for sick, injured, or homeless animals.
- Custom tag options: Pet owners can upgrade their pet’s tag design, with 20% of each purchase donated directly to LBACS.
All dogs in Long Beach, Cerritos, Signal Hill, and Los Alamitos must be licensed and vaccinated against rabies. In Long Beach, cat licensing is also required. Residents can license their pets online at longbeach.gov/acs or in person at the Long Beach Animal Care Center (7700 E. Spring St.). Discounted licenses for adults 60+ are available.
