Long Beach Ranks First Among Top Digital Cities for Five Consecutive Years
For the fifth consecutive year, Long Beach has earned first place in the Center for Digital Government’s annual Digital Cities Survey for 2025, making history as the first municipality in the country to hold the top spot for five years.
The Digital Cities Survey highlights cities that use tech to make life smoother, more connected and more inclusive for residents. Cities are evaluated in categories based on population, and Long Beach topped the list for cities between 250,000 and 499,999 residents.
For 15 straight years, Long Beach has remained in the Top 10 for its population size.
This year’s designation was based on the City’s progress through some of the following key initiatives, which prioritize equity, enhancing digital services, increasing community participation and cyber security in service delivery:
- A four-year technology game plan called TID28 was designed to help Long Beach gear up for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games while staying aligned with its long-term goals.
- A permanent online hub for emergency updates was developed in response to the January 2025 wildfires, helping residents stay in the loop on things like air quality, service impacts and evacuations.
- New webpages now help residents navigate shifting federal policies, including funding developments and immigration information.
- Through the Pitch Long Beach!, the City solicited and tested new ideas—such as high-tech public restrooms—to solve community problems.
- Workshops helped residents understand data privacy laws, protect their digital information and learn more about how the City uses technology.
- The Long Beach Collaboratory paired residents with City staff to design solutions to community challenges.
- There were more professional development opportunities for staff, including expanded cybersecurity training and data management training.
- Digital inclusion efforts reached more people with multilingual resources, and a new digital enrollment hotline and updated guides and maps helped residents access internet, devices and online learning opportunities.
The City continues to expand its digital reach with thoughtful, forward-thinking programs that focus on making information and technology accessible and useful to residents.
