Major shifts in federal spending continue to create uncertainty for cities across the country, and Long Beach is taking proactive steps to keep residents informed about how those changes may impact local programs and services.
City officials have been closely monitoring national policy changes as widespread cuts have emerged this year. While the full extent of the impact is still unfolding, Long Beach is taking action to make sure the community is informed.
Among other efforts, the City launched a web page at longbeach.gov/fedfundingupdates. The page is a go-to resource for residents who want to better understand the basics and evolving situation.
The Federal Funding Updates web page is designed to serve as a central hub for accurate information, answers to frequently asked questions and updates regarding funding challenges—outlining the potential impacts and detailing what the City is doing in response. The Frequently Asked Questions section breaks down the complicated nature of federal funding and what the cuts mean for cities nationwide.
The City will update the web page with links to official information when published regarding funding cuts to specific City programs. The most recent update shares information regarding changes to STI/HIV services administered through the Long Beach Health Department.
Federal dollars have historically played a vital role in Long Beach, supporting everything from public safety and youth programs to affordable housing and public health services. Much of the funding comes in the form of grants that support the City’s most vulnerable populations, and in turn help uplift the entire community
It is important to understand that due to more potential funding changes, some difficult choices may lie ahead. If loss of federal funding becomes widespread through City departments, Long Beach’s General Fund cannot absorb all the costs left behind. The City will need to evaluate programs one by one and adapt when possible, but the sober reality is that if federal funding is cut, it will likely result in real consequences to programs the community relies on.
While the outlook remains uncertain the City of Long Beach is committed to keeping its residents in the loop. Along with the new web page, the City is encouraging the community to stay connected by following @LongBeachCity on social media and signing up for the Go Long Beach newsletter.
