This November is Native American Heritage Month (NAHM) and the City of Long Beach is holding a variety of free programming honoring the histories, cultures, creativity and contributions of Native American and Indigenous peoples.

This month residents are invited to explore Indigenous voices, stories and traditions through author talks, presentations, storytelling, hands-on activities, book displays and reading recommendations at library locations across Long Beach.

Some of November’s NAHM programs include:

Indigenize the City - Sacred Path's Indigenous Youth Advisory Council brings together an exhibition of original artworks from Indigenous youth. The exhibition will be open from Nov. 5 to 30, with an opening reception happening on Thursday, November 5, from 5 to 6:45 p.m., located in the Miller Room at the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W. Broadway). Registration is required.

Author Talk - Author Asha Frost, a member of the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation, will discuss her book, “You Are the Medicine: 13 Indigenous Teachings to Connect to Your Inner Wisdom, Reclaim Your Power, and Heal”, which explores Indigenous teachings and personal healing. The event will take place online on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 11 a.m. Registration is required.

Adult Crafting: Bead Art Hour - Participants will create bead brooches while learning about beadwork traditions among Indigenous peoples, taking place at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, at Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.).

For the complete schedule of events, visit the library’s NAHM events calendar or call the library at 562-570-7500.

The Long Beach Public Library (LBPL)’s NAHM creates a welcoming space where residents can learn about the contributions of Native American and Indigenous people and honor their cultural history.

The LBPL’s Native American Heritage Month programming is generously supported by the Friends of the Long Beach Public Library. Additional educational materials and community resources are available through the library’s Cultural Celebrations webpage.
