Long Beach Celebrates Older Adults Month This May
This May, the City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM), with sponsorship from the Port of Long Beach, will host several free events and programming for adults ages 50 and older in honor of Older Americans Month.
Older Americans Month is a nationally recognized annual celebration that seeks to uplift the health and wellbeing of older adults in Long Beach as well as recognize their impactful contributions to the community. This year’s theme – Champion Your Health—encourages older adults to prioritize prevention, wellness and personal responsibility as keys to healthy aging.
PRM will be hosting a wide variety of events during Older Americans Month:
- May 9 - Pickleball Tournament: Bring your A-game to the court for a fun-filled community competition in a round-robin partner tournament.
Time: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Location: Deforest Park Pickleball Courts (6255 DeForest Ave.)
- May 19 - Blooming Talent Show: Adults can showcase their blossoming talents and shine on the big stage at the Blooming Talent Show. Community members of any age may attend this event.
Time: 3-6 p.m.
Location: Long Beach Senior Center (1150 E. 4 St.)
- May 22 - Silverado Senior Carnival Extravaganza: From line dancing to a live DJ and a magic show, this carnival will be sure to be unforgettable event. This year, a brand-new field trip to the Los Angeles County Fair will be included as part of the festivities.
Time: 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Location: Silverado Park (1545 W. 31 St.)
All programming will be limited to adults ages 50 or older, except for audience attendance at the talent show and pickleball tournament. While these festivities only extend through May, staying active and healthy doesn’t just end after Older Americans Month. PRM offers year-round programming through their Older Adults Program at six city locations that are designated to provide activities and programs like dance, fitness, nutrition, volunteerism and more!
