Long Beach Community Invited to Celebrate 10 Years of Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library
The Long Beach Public Library is inviting the community to celebrate a decade of learning, creativity and connection at the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library with a free, family-friendly 10th anniversary celebration on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Located at 5870 Atlantic Ave., the library will mark the milestone with an afternoon filled with storytelling, music, dancing, hands-on activities and anniversary-themed fun for all ages.
Guests can enjoy special story times and performances, create commemorative items and take part in activities designed to celebrate the library’s role as a welcoming space for learning, discovery and community connection.
Highlights of the celebration include:
Ina, the Sunshine Storyteller: Noon to 1 p.m. All ages can join Sunshine Storyteller Ina Buckner-Barnette for a lively, interactive performance. Guests can sing and dance along as the story train travels through stories about community, unity and hope from around the world.
Teen Sketch-n-Nibble: 12:30 to 2 p.m. Teens ages 13 to 18 can celebrate the library’s 10th anniversary by sharing their creativity and imagining what the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library could look like 10 years from now. While enjoying snacks, participants will create sketches and vote on their favorite designs. The top three designs will receive prizes and be displayed at the library.
Customize Your Tote: 1:30 to 3 p.m. Adults ages 18 and older can create a one-of-a-kind commemorative library tote bag using decorating materials including stamps, iron-on patches, sequins, rhinestones and beads. The activity will take place in the Community Room while supplies last.
Decorate Your Party Hat: 2 to 3 p.m. Children ages 12 and younger and their families can join in the anniversary festivities by decorating their own party hats with sequins, colors, streamers and more.
Since opening its doors in 2016, the 24,000-square-foot Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library has become an important community resource in North Long Beach. The 10th anniversary celebration offers the community an opportunity to celebrate the library’s first decade while looking ahead to the many ways it will continue serving Long Beach residents for years to come.
The anniversary celebration is free and open to the public. Free parking is available on site.
