Long Beach city leaders, first responders and family members gathered this week for the annual Police and Fire Memorial Ceremony, a longstanding tradition honoring police officers and firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Held at the Police and Fire Memorial monument in the Civic Center Plaza, the ceremony paid tribute to 29 police employees and 14 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the community.

Mayor Rex Richardson, Police Chief Wally Hebeish and Fire Chief Dennis Buchanan were among those there to honor the fallen through several ceremonial traditions, including a flag presentation.

A 21-gun salute, accompanied by the playing of “Taps,” served as a solemn farewell and sign of respect from the Long Beach City Honor Guards. The “Last Alarm” tribute included the ringing of a bell three times, repeated three times, symbolizing reflection and remembrance for those who dedicate their lives to protecting others.

The annual ceremony serves as a reminder of Long Beach’s fallen heroes, ensuring their service and sacrifice are never forgotten.
