Long Beach Opens New Police Training Academy
Long Beach is celebrating the opening of its brand-new police training academy — a major investment in public safety that’s on track to welcome the largest police academy class ever. The new academy gives the Long Beach Police Department the space and resources to train up to 100 recruits at a time, doubling its current capacity.
The new academy has been a long-standing priority for the City Council, designed to meet growing service needs as Long Beach’s population increases. The facility is expected to boost recruitment efforts and significantly expand the department’s training capacity, replacing the temporary space used for the past two decades.
The project features a new building with showers, lockers and restrooms, as well as an academy building with larger, specialized classrooms. There are also major site improvements, including updated parking areas, new storm drains, landscaping with drip irrigation and ADA upgrades.
A second phase of the project will begin this year and will include environmental remediation, construction of a new obstacle training course for administration of physical agilities tests, and installation of prefabricated structures for search tactics training, chemical agent exposure training and other scenario-based instruction.
In total, the academy represents a $33 million investment using a mix of Measure A funds, general capital dollars and police impact fees.
