Long Beach Unveils Vision for Future LGBTQ+ Cultural District
A colorful new vision for one of Long Beach's most historic and beloved neighborhoods is coming to life.
In June, City leaders revealed the first conceptual design renderings for the future LGBTQ+ Cultural District. Community members had the chance to preview planned improvements and learn more about the project.
The LGBTQ+ Cultural District will enhance the Broadway corridor between Alamitos and Temple avenues, creating a welcoming destination that celebrates the history, culture and lasting contributions of Long Beach's LGBTQ+ community while strengthening one of the city's most recognizable commercial corridors.
The project builds on the LGBTQ+ Cultural District Strategic Improvement Plan, which was shaped through an extensive community visioning process that included surveys, public workshops and conversations with local business owners. Following the adoption of the plan in 2024, the Department of Public Works is now leading implementation of its first phase.
Initial improvements will focus on the Broadway corridor between Hermosa and Junipero avenues, an area located near Bixby Park, the beach and the route of the annual Long Beach Pride Parade. Planned enhancements include colorful overhead festoon lighting, decorative banners and pole wraps, new public art and a signature Pride Plaza that will create a stronger sense of place while celebrating the neighborhood's rich history and identity.
As additional funding becomes available, the City also plans to install new street trees where feasible to provide shade and enhance the corridor's appearance. Future improvements identified in the strategic plan include decorative crosswalks, artistic utility box wraps, architectural lighting and other streetscape enhancements that will continue to strengthen the district over time.
The project area has long served as a center for LGBTQ+-owned businesses, organizations and gathering spaces that have played an important role in Long Beach's cultural identity. Community feedback helped shape both the vision for the district and its expanded boundaries, ensuring the project reflects the neighborhood's history while creating an even more welcoming experience for residents and visitors.
The project has been made possible through $850,000 in federal funding and represents another milestone in the City's broader efforts to invest in neighborhoods, support local businesses and create vibrant public spaces throughout Long Beach.
The LGBTQ+ Cultural District is part of the City's Elevate '28 Infrastructure Investment Plan, which includes nearly 200 projects designed to improve parks, streets, public facilities and neighborhood spaces across Long Beach. As the project moves forward, the new district will honor the community's legacy while creating an inviting destination that can be enjoyed for generations to come.
