Long Beach Unveils Plans for Greener, Safer 10th Street Corridor
Long Beach is inviting residents to get a first look at what’s next for the 10th Street Greenbelt.
The Department of Public Works will host a community meeting on Thursday, May 28 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Recreation Park Community Center, where attendees can explore the final design for the project’s next phase.
Located between 8th and 10th streets and bounded by Termino and Grand avenues, the 10th Street Greenbelt is part of a broader effort to transform a historic corridor into a vibrant stretch of open space. Once a segment of the Pacific Electric Red Car rail line, the area has steadily evolved since the city adopted its vision plan in 2014 and opened the greenbelt to the public in 2016.
Now, the project is moving forward with a new round of improvements aimed at making the space greener, safer and more inviting. Plans include native, drought-tolerant trees and landscaping, upgraded irrigation and new trails branching off the main path. Pathway lighting, seating areas and updated signage are also part of the design, all intended to create a more welcoming and functional community space. This next phase builds on improvements completed in 2022, funded by Measure A.
Work is expected to begin in early 2027, with completion anticipated by fall 2027.
Recent funding has added momentum. The project received $630,000 through the City Council’s Fiscal Year 2026 Capital Improvement Program for detailed design work, along with a $1.5 million grant from Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District in March 2026 to help bring the full vision to life. This project is a key part of Elevate ‘28, a five-year plan to revitalize parks and public spaces while improving accessibility and transportation options across Long Beach.
With construction on the horizon, the 10th Street Greenbelt is set to continue its transformation into a lively, connected space for the community. More information about the project is available online.
