The City of Long Beach is accepting applications for its Youth Advisory Council now through July 31.

The Youth Advisory Council is an opportunity for young leaders to influence local policies and programs, ensuring that the perspectives and needs of their peers are represented in City efforts.

Now in its fourth year, the body of 11 young people between the ages of 16 and 26 play a vital role in ensuring authentic youth-led engagement for the Youth and Emerging Adults Strategic Plan, the Measure US Youth Fund and annual Youth Summit, among other efforts, as well as promote health equity in neighborhoods disproportionately impacted by violence, poverty and adverse health outcomes.

The council empowers young voices in the community by providing a platform for them to engage, advocate and make a lasting difference in their neighborhoods and throughout the city. Youth Advisory Councilmembers serve as liaisons within their districts and collaborate with City commissions, departments, community partners and the Mayor’s Office.

Applications may be submitted online to the City’s Office of Youth Development. Eligibility requirements include:

  • Be between the ages of 16 to 26 by Sept. 1
  • Live in Long Beach
  • Be available to meet for two hours, two afternoons per month, in locations across the city
  • Have a passion for issues affecting youth in Long Beach

Youth who are selected will be notified later this summer.

Participants receive a $50 stipend per meeting, up to $1,100, for a one-year term as well as mentorship and development opportunities by City staff.
