From Empty to Eye-Catching: Storefront Art Brightens Business Corridors
From Vacancy to Vibrancy, Long Beach’s commercial corridors are getting a splash of color thanks to a new program designed to beautify vacant storefronts.
The City’s Department of Economic Development & Opportunity, teaming up with the Arts Council for Long Beach, recently launched the initiative to provide property owners with no-cost vinyl window wraps designed by local artists.
The temporary wraps—made with artwork inspired by Long Beach’s unique neighborhoods, culture and history—are meant to brighten streets, discourage vandalism and hopefully catch the eye of potential tenants. It’s basically a street-level art gallery taking the place of yet another “For Lease” sign.
The Vacancy to Vibrancy pilot program is funded by a one-time $25,000 allocation in the City’s budget. Local leaders view it as a win for everyone: artists get fresh canvases to share their work, property owners benefit from added curb appeal, small businesses enjoy more welcoming commercial districts and residents get to see something more cheerful than a blank space in their neighborhood.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis—generally within two to three months—with priority given to long-standing vacancies in key commercial areas. The program will stay open until funds run out, so property owners are encouraged to act sooner rather than later.
Property owners interested in participating can apply online or reach BizCare at 562-570-4BIZ (4249) or BizCare@longbeach.gov.
