Long Beach Airport (LGB) has reduced its carbon emissions by 56% since 2016—far exceeding its own sustainability targets and underscoring its commitment to environmental stewardship. The Airport also recently renewed its Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation from Airports Council International (ACI), a designation achieved by only 75 airports nationwide.

Level 2 accreditation recognizes airports that successfully reduce their carbon footprint per passenger through data-driven monitoring and ongoing emissions-cutting initiatives. LGB had previously set ambitious goals of reducing emissions 20% by 2025 and 40% by 2030, compared to 2016 levels. Thanks to sustained progress across multiple programs, the Airport has already surpassed those milestones years ahead of schedule.

LGB’s substantial emissions reductions stem from several key initiatives. These include participation in a voluntary emissions-reduction program with the South Coast Air Quality Management District and the full electrification of all 11 commercial gates for ground service equipment. The Airport also incentivizes the use of cleaner, unleaded UL94 aviation fuel among general aviation users and supports Atlantic Aviation’s efforts to provide Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for business jets. In 2024, two new solar canopy installations covering nearly 133,000 square feet were added atop LGB’s parking structures, cutting Airport-controlled electricity usage by 10% compared to the previous year.

The Airport first earned carbon accreditation in 2021 following a third-party analysis of its emissions. Maintaining this status requires LGB to track, report, and reduce emissions annually under a formal carbon management plan.
