Meet Gumbo.

Once the Long Beach Animal Care Services’ longest-stay dog—spending nearly two years (700 days) at the facility before finding his forever home—this 5-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier has gone from kennel resident to red-carpet ready.

Gumbo was recently named a quarterfinalist in the nationwide America’s Favorite Pet contest. Although he did not win, Gumbo has already claimed the biggest prize of all: a loving home.

Gumbo’s journey began when a Good Samaritan found him abandoned in a local park, suffering from scars and hair loss across his entire body. Despite his wounds, he arrived jumping, smiling and happy to see people, quickly becoming a favored dog among shelter staff and volunteers.

But, like many large black dogs, Gumbo was long overlooked, waiting patiently while others were adopted around him.

Still, Gumbo never let those 700 days dim his light.

With his charming underbite and beautiful brindle coat, those who take the time to know him quickly discover that Gumbo is a lover, not a barker, offering kisses all day long.

He’s wild-eyed for cheese, an undefeated tug-of-war champion, a blanket-wrestling enthusiast, a jogging buddy extraordinaire and a devoted snuggler. He’s never without his favorite big green ball. He’s also very photogenic and loves to play dress-up, sporting holiday sweaters and hats of all sorts, even winning a local costume contest.

One might say Gumbo’s personality is bigger than his blocky head—which is saying something.

Gumbo’s story is a reminder that second chances can lead to center stage moments. Whether he moves on to the next round of America’s Favorite Pet or simply continues living his best couch-conquering life, one thing is certain: this former shelter underdog is now top dog in the hearts of everyone who cheered him on.
