Long Beach Invites Community to Honor Veterans on Street Banners
Nominations are now open for Long Beach’s third annual Veterans Banner Program, which honors local service members with commemorative banners displayed along major thoroughfares.
It’s a chance to spotlight veterans and their stories, with their names, faces and military branches on display on street banners around Long Beach for a full year, starting this summer.
Nominations are open now and will be accepted through Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
Last year, 65 veterans were recognized with individual banners. This year, up to 65 veterans will again be selected. Community members are encouraged to nominate veterans—living or deceased—who served honorably and have a connection to Long Beach.
Eligible nominees must meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Have been born or raised in Long Beach;
- Currently work or previously worked in Long Beach;
- Currently reside or previously resided in Long Beach;
- Were educated in Long Beach; or
- Formerly stationed or worked at local military facilities such as the Long Beach Naval Station or Shipyard, Long Beach Naval Hospital, Long Beach Armory or the Veterans Affairs Long Beach campus.
The Health Department’s Office of Veterans Support is partnering with the Long Beach Veterans Commission to oversee the program and selection process.
Nominators will be asked to provide details about the veteran’s military service, including branch, dates of service, primary duties, highest rank achieved and any honors or awards received. Applicants should also describe the veteran’s connection to the Long Beach community, including involvement in civic, community-based or veterans’ organizations.
Selected honorees are expected to be notified by May 2026.
