Long Beach Invites Residents to Donate Old Bikes for Upcycling
Got a bicycle sitting in the garage collecting dust? The City of Long Beach wants to put it to good use.
On Saturday, May 2, the City of Long Beach is hosting a Recycle Your Bicycle event, a community drop-off day where residents can bring used, nonmotorized bicycles they no longer need. The goal is simple: keep bikes out of landfills and get them back on the road again in the hands of people who need them.
The event is being organized by the City’s Energy & Environmental Services team with help from recycling partner WM and local nonprofit Pedal Movement. Together, they’ll collect bikes, fix up the ones that can be repaired, and pass them along to local organizations that give them to residents in need. If a bike is too worn out to ride again, its parts will be recycled instead.
Residents can drop off bikes between 9 a.m. and noon at four parks:
- Silverado Park, 1545 W. 31st St.
- Recreation Park, 736 Park Ave.
- Houghton Park, 6301 Myrtle Ave.
- Whaley Park, 5620 E. Atherton St.
City leaders say people donating old bikes is a small action that can have a big community payoff. A bike can become someone’s way to get to school, work or simply get around town. At the same time, recycling bike parts helps reduce waste.
When it was last held in 2024, the Recycle Your Bicycle event collected 178 bicycles. More than 50 were repaired and donated, while the rest were recycled for usable parts.
Recycle Your Bicycle is part of a bigger push in Long Beach to cut down on waste and support cleaner ways to get around. It’s also part of Long Beach’s annual Bike Month activities, with more details expected soon.
