Long Beach Libraries Kick Off Summer of Reading, Activities and Family Fun
A summer filled with books, creativity and family fun is about to bloom at Long Beach libraries.
The Long Beach Public Library is inviting residents of all ages to participate in its annual Summer Reading Program running from June 13 through Aug. 8. The free eight-week program encourages children, teens and adults to read, learn and explore through books, activities, challenges and special events at all 12 library locations. This year’s theme is “Plant A Seed, Read!”
Participants can earn points throughout the summer by reading books, attending library programs, completing creative activities and discovering new interests. Registration opens June 13 and is available online through Beanstack or in person at any Long Beach Public Library location.
The program kicks off June 13 with a day of special family performances at three library branches across the city:
- Billie Jean King Main Library — Michael Rayner’s juggling comedy show at 11 a.m.
- Los Altos Neighborhood Library — Christopher T. Magician at 12:15 p.m.
- Mark Twain Neighborhood Library — Christopher T. Magician at 3 p.m.
The excitement continues throughout the summer with a variety of free programs and performances, including music, crafts, puppet shows, animal presentations and other activities designed for children, teens and adults.
Young readers ages 12 and under can earn prizes for every 10 points they complete, while teens and adults can earn rewards by participating in reading and activity challenges. Children who earn at least 10 points will be entered into a grand prize drawing, with additional opportunities to win available for those who reach 50 points. Teens and adults who complete the program will also be eligible for special prize drawings.
Summer Reading has long been a seasonal tradition for Long Beach families, offering opportunities to stay engaged, continue learning and build a lifelong love of reading while school is out.
The program is made possible through support from the Long Beach Public Library Foundation, the Friends of the Long Beach Public Library and the Port of Long Beach, whose contributions help provide books, prizes and educational performances throughout the summer.
The Summer Reading Program is free and open to the public. More information about registration, events and upcoming library programs is available at Long Beach Public Library.
