This Weekend in Long Beach: Memorial Day Weekend Features BBQ and Family Fun
Memorial Day weekend is packed with community celebrations, live entertainment and family-friendly activities. Here’s what’s happening in Long Beach:
Older Americans Month Silverado Senior Carnival Extravaganza
Date: Friday, May 22
Time: 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Location: Silverado Park (1545 W. 31st St.)
What to Expect: Adults ages 55 or older are invited to enjoy carnival games, photo booths, prizes, a live DJ, magic show, line dancing and more.
Cost: Free
Date: Saturday, May 23
Time: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Location: Marine Stadium (490 Bay Shore Ave.)
What to Expect: Bring the whole family, including pets, to this showcase of goods by local makers, including junior artists. Entertainment includes live music, DIY crafting and more. There’s also a bicycle valet.
Cost: Free
Date: Saturday-Sunday, May 23-24
Time: Noon to 9 p.m. (VIP entry at 11 a.m.)
Location: Rainbow Lagoon (400 E. Shoreline Drive)
What to Expect: This family-friendly festival features an exciting lineup of celebrated pitmasters and rising stars in live fire cooking.

Date: Saturday, May 23
Time: 1 to 3 p.m.
Location: Navy Memorial, Shoreline Aquatic Park (200 Aquarium Way)
What to Expect: This public event honors the “Lost 74” sailors of the USS Frank E. Evans, which collided with an Australian aircraft carrier in 1969. The commemoration features ceremonial tributes led by survivors and families, including a reading of the fallen sailors’ names.

High School Battle of the Bands
Date: Saturday, May 23
Time: 4 to 7 p.m.
Location: Bandshell at Recreation Park (701-939 Federation Drive)
What to Expect: Bands will perform songs for votes from the crowd and judges in this fourth annual contest.

Date: Sunday, May 24
Time: Registration opens at 6:20 a.m., running starts at 7 a.m.
Location: 200 Aquarium Way
What to Expect: Runners will step along the beach bike path along the waterfront in this flat and scenic course.
