Vida Latina, a citywide cultural celebration presented by the Long Beach Public Library, will come to life with special events Sept. 13 through Oct. 15 at all branches.

The theme this year, Unity and Herencia, brings together traditions old and new, honoring the roots, resilience and voices of Latin(e) communities. Whether you’re into colorful crafts, story times or toe-tapping rhythms, Vida Latina promises a mix of experiences for every generation.

Sure to be a highlight of Vida Latina is Cruisin’ Long Beach: Celebrando la Cultura Lowrider on Friday, Oct. 3 at Mark Twain Neighborhood Library. The event will feature a lowrider car show, mobile art gallery with Drive Savant Foundation’s DSF Werks and crafts and activities that celebrate this iconic art form on wheels.

From Frida-inspired self-portrait making to playing Lotería, other highpoints of this year’s Vida Latina celebration include:

Mike Alfaro
  • Paint Your Own Cantaritos sessions at participating branches
  • Bilingual storyteller Josue Cuentacuentos sharing energetic Selena-themed stories at multiple branches
  • Game night with Yo Sabo Game creators Sept. 30 at Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library
  • Acclaimed graphic novelist Kayden Phoenix leading a superhero-making workshop on Oct. 11 at Bach Neighborhood Library
  • Mike Alfaro, the mind behind “Millennial Lotería” engaging in an author talk on Oct. 11 at Billie Jean King Main Library
  • Ruby Clouds, a Latin Alternative duo blending English and Spanish lyrics, bringing music and literature together on Oct. 11 at Los Altos Library

The celebration wraps up Wednesday, Oct. 15 with La Gran Tardeada at Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library, where live music, dancing and family-friendly crafts, including a performance by Mariachi Tierra Mia, will close out the month in true Latin(e) culture fashion.

With joyful traditions and plenty of sabor, all generously supported by Long Beach Public Library Foundation and the Port of Long Beach, the full list of Vida Latina free community events is available on the LBPL calendar.
