A once-vacant motel has been transformed into a place of hope and new beginnings. Homekey at 5950, the City of Long Beach’s newest interim housing facility, is opening its doors to help people experiencing homelessness take their next steps toward permanent housing.

The former Luxury Inn has been fully reimagined into 78 upgraded units, including 12 ADA-accessible rooms, through California’s Project Homekey initiative. Each unit now features modern amenities such as new bathrooms, lighting, microwaves, refrigerators and on-site laundry. Outside, residents can enjoy drought-tolerant landscaping, upgraded common areas and ADA-compliant pathways throughout the property.

More than just a place to stay, Homekey at 5950 offers support to help residents find long-term stability. Operated by First to Serve, the site provides case management, three meals a day, health and safety support from trauma-informed staff and coordinated housing referrals for smooth transitions into permanent homes.

The facility’s renovations began in February 2024 and will be fully operational by early November 2025, with referrals available through the City’s Multi-Service Center and Mobile Access Center.

Homekey at 5950 was made possible through a partnership between the State of California, City of Long Beach, and Measure A and AB32 funds. It joins other recent housing milestones, including the Youth Shelter and Navigation Center and Homekey at 1725.

Since 2020, Long Beach has increased its year-round shelter capacity by 159%, now offering more than 1,450 beds citywide—with more on the way through upcoming programs like Roots through Recovery and the Encampment Resolution Fund.
