The Long Beach Public Library is celebrating Black History Month this February with the return of For the Culture, a vibrant series of free community events inviting residents of all ages to gather, learn and celebrate Black joy, identity and artistic expression.

Throughout February, library branches across the city will host For the Culture Black History Month programs centered on visual arts and cultural storytelling. Activities will include hands-on workshops, interactive storytimes, trivia, bingo and more.

All programs are free and require no registration.

The celebration kicks off on Friday, Feb. 6, with an evening event presented in partnership with Forgotten Images and the African American Cultural Center of Long Beach. Taking place from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the African American Cultural Center (4321 Atlantic Ave.), the event will feature interactive art experiences alongside local vendors offering artist-made goods.

The monthlong celebration will conclude with Jazz in the Library on Friday, Feb. 27 at the Los Altos Neighborhood Library (5614 Britton Drive). Presented in partnership with Black Art Distrikt and the Radical Hood Library, the library will be transformed into a cultural lounge from 5:30 to 8 p.m., offering live jazz and poetry for a reflective and soulful close to the series.

For the Culture is made possible through collaboration with local cultural leaders and Black-led organizations, with generous support from the Port of Long Beach and the Long Beach Public Library Foundation.

Full event details and updates can be found on the Long Beach Public Library events calendar.
